On Monday I got this email from a debater I met at the NC Open. His questions apply to all team policy debaters, so I’ve recorded a response for everyone.

“Great getting to talk with you. Appreciated your time this week. Got some more questions:

  • Negative strategy: I know you’re a proponent of shell & extend. What does that look like when run properly, and why would it be better than a hybrid?
  • Neg with no evidence: What mindset should I have to find arguments? (I asked [redacted name] this, and he said “logical fallacies, and whatever parts of the case seem like they wouldn’t really work”. Is that it, and if so, how do I get better at seeing them?)
  • Drilling on my own time: Are there any drills I can do without a partner? This would make practice eminently easier.”
