Who is Zachary?
Zachary (Zak) Kos is a Lincoln-Douglas and Parliamentary Debate coach for Ethos Debate. He is currently attending Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas.
Zak began his debate journey competing in Stoa during high school. He participated both as a speaker and a debater, learning that success comes gradually over time.
During his freshman and sophomore year, he learned, grew, and improved in Lincoln-Douglas and Parliamentary debate as well as Apologetics. Soon realizing how quickly time flies, Zak competed for the first time in new events. Over the course of his junior and senior year Zak competed in Apologetics, Mars Hill Impromptu, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu, Persuasive, and Original Oratory across the nation in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Through this opportunity, Zak gained experience with various regional styles and formalities of debate technique and speech preference.
With a highly successful senior year, he placed top four in the league in overall Speech Rankings. Some of his favorite events include Apologetics, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Parliamentary Debate. His best event overall tended to be Apologetics with 5 first place finishes at tournaments in several states.
During his time in Stoa, Zak assisted numerous competitors in brainstorming, argumentation, and case writing. Once, he helped a friend go 6-0 in prelims and 7-1 overall. He also served as a mentor to one of his club’s novice debaters for two years.
Throughout his years of experience in Stoa, Zak learned essential communication, critical thinking, and time management skills. Learning a generally robust work ethic was perhaps the greatest achievement by far. The transformative impact Stoa has ingrained in his life will never be taken away. Today, he is thankful for the opportunity to introduce newer students to the wonderful world of speech and debate along with its numerous life-changing results.
With a passion for investing in the next generation of competitors, I aspire to help each competitor’s unique and personal style shine in competition. Speech and debate experience is crucial for success in today’s society. Not only should students learn how to compete, but how to use their competitive spirit to hone in on articulation, communication, and persuasion. Whenever I help students, they find the most successful use of their time bouncing ideas and receiving help incorporating those ideas into cases and structured speech patterns. Each session, I hope to equip students with a strategy for success and a plan for improving their skills. Above all else, I desire to pass on my love for God and the sport of debate to others.
At the end of the day, always remember the word of Paul, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:3. Why do we compete? Not for our own glory, but for God’s magnification!
